Why does a hamster need a hamster wheel? In short: the urge to move.
Rodents run a lot. Wild golden hamsters have to run quite a lot in the wild. Be it to look for food, to run away from enemies or in search of a mate. This is not only the case with hamsters, but with practically all rodents.
If an animal in a hamster wheel makes up to 30,000 revolutions a night and you convert that, it's 20 to 30 kilometres. Females walk more during their ovulation - that's also in their nature, because in the wild they would go in search of males.
But when they have young, they are not interested in running at all. In the wild, they would also look after their offspring instead of running around the countryside.
