Fresh hay is not only used as soft underlay and stable bedding, hay must always be available in sufficient quantities. It has a high crude fibre content and is elementary for the digestion of our animals. In the natural habitat of our domestic animals' ancestors, grass was indispensable as the main food - at least in summer.
Wild guinea pigs, for example, feed mainly on grasses and herbs. The digestive tract of the domesticated domestic guinea pig is still almost identical to that of its wild conspecifics. However, as it is not always possible to offer fresh grasses and herbs in our husbandry and also our winter prevents meadows from growing all year round, hay is THE substitute and thus represents the basic food of our pets.
Guinea pigs, rabbits and hamsters also need to eat a lot of hay to wear down their teeth. Tooth wear in a guinea pig, for example, amounts to a remarkable 2mm in a week!
The molars are only worn down by hay or fresh food, which is enormously important.
