KNOWLEDGE - Skin and Coat Care
Skin and coat care in dogs is a lot more demanding than you might think. The anatomical differences between dog breeds are great - and so is the case with skin and coat. If you compare a Newfoundland with a Chihuahua, for example, the differences are quickly apparent. The Newfoundland: large with a relatively thick skin, long top coat and dense undercoat. The Chihuahua: small with rather thin and sensitive skin as well as fine outer coat and almost no undercoat.

The hair and coat structure of our dogs
The dog's coat basically consists of outer coat and undercoat (woolly coat). The thicker and coarser outer coat protects against dirt and moisture, while the woolly coat is mainly used to regulate heat. Depending on the breed, the type of coat varies greatly. We can divide our dogs into 3 main groups, each with its own characteristics and special requirements:

1. SHORT HAIR / GLAT HAIR
Shorthair has a very short life span of approx. 6 - 12 weeks, falls out and is replaced by new hair. Ex. Boxer, Viszla, Doberman, etc.

2.  DRAHTH HAIR / RAUHAAR
Several layers of top coat and underneath a layer of relatively short undercoat. Ex. Jack Russell, Roughhaired Dachshund, Schnauzer, Airedale Terrier, etc.

3. LONGhair / STOCKhair
Particularly dense undercoat under the outer coat. These animals go through a coat change lasting several weeks in spring and autumn. E.g. Sheepdogs, Sled Dogs, Bearded Collies, Tibetan Terriers, etc.
 
Although the structure of skin and hair is very similar in humans and dogs, dogs still have very special requirements for their care. There are even important differences between the various dog breeds.
